Today’s post celebrates a friend who has been job searching. She’s someone who has championed me and who, in recent years, allowed me the honor of cheering her on as she navigated a challenging job search. Just yesterday, she texted good news: “I got the job!!!”

During a busy season in my career when I was pursuing a VP role at a PR agency, my friend was my go-to for pep talks, navigating each interview step with me and celebrating each milestone along the way. She was a stay-at-home mom who had had a successful career years back, so I think she vicariously participated in my career journey.

Fast-forward a few decades, and the tables turned. My friend found herself rebuilding a career after facing life changes, including a divorce and embracing sobriety from alcohol use. Her journey back into the workforce was no small feat; it required grit, patience, and faith.

Starting with a role selling cosmetics at a local pharmacy, she slowly rebuilt her skills and confidence. But applying for other roles seemed a bit of a stretch. It took several years for her to reestablish herself—to demonstrate her commitment, prove her dedication, and show her resilience.

When she finally landed an interview at a senior living facility, a field she was passionate about, it seemed like the perfect opportunity. But she didn’t get the offer.

Rather than give up, she took it as a sign to stay connected, holding out hope for the next possibility. And then it happened—a new position opened, she interviewed, and this time, she got the offer.

Cheering her on from the sidelines was humbling for me, knowing the perseverance it took for her to get to this point. Her journey wasn’t quick or easy, but she kept going, demonstrating her strength and commitment each step of the way.

This Thanksgiving season, I invite you to reach out to someone who’s been there for you or to offer encouragement to someone in need of it now. And if you’re in the midst of a long road yourself, keep at it. Finding the right opportunity takes time, faith, and resilience. Celebrate each small victory, lean on your network, and know that the search, however long, is part of your growth.

Together, we can give thanks not just for our accomplishments but for the people who’ve helped us along the way. And when the chance arises, may we be ready to offer that same support to others.
