As I bring a treat to my dog Duke, I catch a heartwarming sight: he’s sitting patiently by the door, gaze fixed, and often drooling. He isn’t rushing, barking, or pacing; he simply waits, fully aware that something good is on its way. His quiet anticipation demonstrates the wait itself is part of the gift.

This brings to mind a Native American proverb: “Give thanks for unknown blessings already on their way.” It encourages us to practice gratitude, not only when our wishes are fulfilled but also while we’re waiting. So often we focus on the moment of arrival, forgetting to enjoy the journey that leads us there.

The Role of Anticipation

There’s a special kind of happiness that comes with looking forward to something, be it a book on hold at the library, an upcoming trip, or a visit with a friend. Studies even show that people derive happiness from the anticipation of positive experiences, sometimes as much as the experiences themselves. It’s There’s a quiet joy in looking forward, in that wonderful moment of “not yet, but soon.”

Ways to Embrace the Waiting

Instead of viewing anticipation as an empty pause, choose to embrace it with intention. Here are a few ways to savor the waiting period:

  • Visualize the Fulfillment: Whether it’s a package you ordered, a gathering with loved ones, or a new experience, take a few moments to picture it. Feel the excitement and satisfaction it will bring. This little exercise can boost our mood and helps bring the joy of the moment into the present.
  • Create Small Rituals: Waiting for something special? Build up the excitement by designating time and space to enjoy it. Share a preview with a friend and then text a photo when it arrives or happens.
  • Practice Active Gratitude: While waiting, take a few moments to acknowledge what you’re grateful for today and what you’re looking forward to. This blends gratitude for what’s present with excitement for what’s on the way, turning anticipation into a rewarding experience.
  • Find Delight in the Pause: Sometimes, waiting offers a rare pause in life’s constant rush. Use this time to unwind, relax, or simply be still, recognizing that, like my dog’s calm gaze, anticipation has its own quiet charm.

When you find yourself waiting, whether for something grand or simple, savor the pause trusting that it serves a valuable purpose. It’s a moment to lean into gratitude and acknowledge that sometimes the unknown blessings on their way are already bringing joy—even before they arrive.
