On my daily walks, I often find myself drawn to the little treasures nature leaves behind—interesting rocks, uniquely shaped sticks, and sometimes even the occasional feather.
These items are tiny, tangible pieces of the outdoors that I can bring home. I don’t know much about the geology behind the rocks I pick up, nor can I identify them, but to me, it’s the uniqueness – the colors, textures and shapes – that makes them special.
There’s something grounding about holding these natural elements. The texture of a smooth stone or the rough bark of a branch is a tactile reminder of where I’ve been and what I’ve noticed. Bringing these pieces indoors is like carrying a bit of my hike or walk into my home—nature doesn’t just live outside; it becomes part of my everyday surroundings.
I’ve found that decorating with these small pieces of the earth adds an effortless, personal touch to my living space. A few stones on a windowsill or a stick placed in a vase are moments from my walks that I can revisit anytime. It’s a simple, cost-free way to connect to the outdoors, even when I’m inside.
If you’ve never thought of picking up a stone or stick along your path, give it a try! You don’t need to know what it is—just that it caught your eye for a reason.
