With so many worthy causes, charities, and non-profits out there, you’ll spread yourself thin unless you focus support – both time and money. At the same time, being open to learning about what others care about can broaden your perspective and deepen your connections.
Today, my business purchased a table at the annual HOPE Awakens luncheon to support women in recovery, an initiative I deeply care about. Several clients and colleagues are joining us, and I’m looking forward to spending time with them in a setting that fosters change. This event is an opportunity not just to give but also to share the experience with others.
A networking expert I admire says that inviting someone to attend a charity event with no financial obligation—just time and interest—can deepen relationships while doing something worthy. It’s a great way to spend time together while making a difference, and it’s a nice departure from meeting at a coffee shop.
In October, I’ll be attending an event for Bricks to Bread, a non-profit that helps build brick ovens for Costa Rican families seeking a sustainable source of income. My new friend from my alumni group invited my husband and me to learn more about the organization, and I’m excited to branch out into a cause I wasn’t familiar with before.
Of course, you can’t say yes to everything. It’s important to set boundaries and recognize that it’s OK to decline invitations or donation requests. You don’t have to support every cause, and you shouldn’t feel guilty about focusing your efforts. However, in the spirit of discovery, it’s worth considering causes you don’t yet know well—sometimes those become the most rewarding.
Stay open to the possibility of learning, growing, and connecting in new ways.

Right On, Sister! It seems Michel and I get opportunities every day to support people in need! We always feel good when we do so especially when there are no expectations of “a return on the investment.” Last week we contributed $100 to a spay the strays day in Sora.
This week we gave money to Arcadio’s sister who has made curtains for us, two cover two cancer treatments this month and in November.
I have to say my first reaction to your title today was: oh study or travel abroad…that’s what I associate broadening horizons with. Cheers,Katherine Yahoo Mail: Search, organise, conquer

I appreciate your advice both to focus and to embrace curiosity for new worthwhile causes! There are so many people we can each help in this world- and by helping others we help ourselves even more!!
I am excited for you to learn about Bricks to Bread! As an entrepreneur yourself, you will appreciate all the entrepreneurs who, with the help of Bricks to Bread, start their own businesses to support their families and their local communities. Having resources to get started and someone to believe in them are the key things for an entrepreneur to start and succeed. This is exactly what Bricks to Bread provides!
