Savoring September Saturdays

Easing into September means Saturdays are no longer full-on summer, but they’re not quite autumn either. This transition is an opportunity to savor the weekend.

The word “savor” means to fully appreciate and enjoy something, taking time to absorb the details and moments that bring us joy. In a world that often feels rushed, savoring is an act of mindfulness—it’s about slowing down to enjoy what’s right in front of us. Earlier this year, I wrote about choosing “savor” as my intention or word of the year; admittedly, sometimes I forget this!

With back-to-school routines settling in and the post-Labor Day rush behind us, September Saturdays are a chance to unwind, reset, and soak in the changing season.

This means taking Duke on a longer off-leash walk, where he can explore and enjoy his own September freedom. It’s no secret that my simple joys include spending time outdoors, reading, planning a fun meal, or taking a leisurely afternoon drive with my husband. It’s a slower pace that renews my energy for the week ahead.

But enough about me—what can you do to savor your September Saturdays?

Unwind and Reset: Give yourself permission to relax. Whether it’s lounging with a book, indulging in an afternoon nap, or savoring your coffee a little longer, take time to recharge.

Outdoor Adventures: Explore the beauty of the outdoors, whether it’s a peaceful walk, a scenic drive to catch the first signs of fall, or a bike ride through your neighborhood. Breathe in the fresh air and savor the still-warm sun.

Home Projects: Tackle a small, satisfying project—declutter a closet, rearrange your space for a fresh perspective, or plant some seasonal flowers. Small accomplishments can be surprisingly fulfilling.

In the Kitchen: Experiment with seasonal ingredients. Late summer fruits, like peaches and plums, are still in season, and fall’s heartier veggies are just starting to make an appearance. Maybe this weekend is the perfect time to bake or cook something new!

Mind-Body Renewal: If you’re craving balance, try a longer yoga session, meditate, or take a mindful walk. Reconnect with yourself and savor the peaceful moments of the day.

Whatever your plans, take time to savor the slow, simple pleasures of September Saturdays. After all, this is the time to enjoy the best of both summer and fall.
