I haven’t spent much time in the backyard lately but thanks to our rainier than usual summer, it’s simply lush with greens and yellows. I was particularly struck by the unexpected beauty of my Leopard Plant, also known as Summer Ragwort. Native to China and Japan, this plant is now in full bloom and adding a touch of the exotic to my very own backyard.
The most wondrous things are right in front of us, if only we take a moment to notice. While I spend a lot of time in nature, I sometimes overlook the beauty and serenity that my backyard offers.
But taking just two minutes to explore and discover brings a sense of peace and wonder. Whether it’s the vibrant colors of a blooming flower, the delicate dance of a butterfly, or the gentle rustling of leaves in the breeze, these small moments can have a big impact on our well-being.
Spending time outdoors, even briefly, is not just a pleasure but a necessity for our health. Studies show that time in nature can reduce stress, improve mood, and boost overall mental health. By marveling at nature’s distinctions and reflecting on our own seasons of growth, we cultivate a vital practice for personal flourishing.
For those looking to deepen their connection with the natural world, I recommend listening to an inspiring interview with author Amy Tan on BYU Radio’s Constant Wonder . Tan shares her insights on the profound impact of nature on creativity and life.
Additionally, the Indianapolis Children’s Museum offers a delightful guide to backyard discovery . While designed for children, it’s a fantastic resource for anyone eager to explore the hidden gems in their own outdoor spaces.
Step outside, take a deep breath, and spend a few minutes exploring your backyard. Who knows what beauties you might find? And in doing so, you may just find a bit of yourself, blooming in the process.
