Summer Saturdays are often filled with errands, home projects, and social activities, but with all the fresh produce at its peak—whether from your garden (not mine, I’m not that ambitious) or the farmers market—it’s a wonderful time to cook. It’s also an opportunity to prep items for the week ahead: chop veggies, wash lettuce leaves, make a few salads or side dishes, or whip up a vinaigrette with fresh herbs.

Today, I’m thinking about a classic BLT—crisp bacon, fresh lettuce, and ripe tomatoes, all brought together with homemade mayonnaise. There’s nothing quite like that perfect bite of summer. I’m eager to find the ripest tomatoes and some fresh, crunchy lettuce at the market. And while I’m at it, a few juicy peaches might just find their way into a cobbler later on.

These recipes are quintessential summer for me, evoking memories of sunny days and simple, satisfying meals.

Fair Memories Inspire Good, Wholesome Food

I have fond memories of attending the Minnesota State Fairs with my kids, usually on Labor Day as a final hoorah before the first day of school, and the Iowa State Fair with my Dad, who never missed a chance to enjoy the fair’s unique offerings.

But here’s the thing—you don’t need a blue ribbon to know your recipe is a winner. Whether it’s a tried-and-true favorite or a fun kitchen experiment, what truly matters is the time, attention, and love you pour into the food. Maybe your recipe is more of a hack, like adding a secret ingredient to a store-bought item, or maybe you excel at mash-ups, combining recipes and ingredients in new and exciting ways. Whatever it is, it’s your personal touch that makes it special.

There’s no shortage of inspiration out there, from cooking shows to YouTube videos and TikToks. But I truly admire the local cooks who have perfected their recipes and participate in State Fair competitions for those coveted blue ribbons. Whether you’re a professional, a competitor, or just someone who loves to experiment in the kitchen, here’s to all the cooks who bring joy to the table. Your creations, no matter how simple or elaborate, are always worth celebrating.
