Sometimes, all it takes to breathe new life into your home is to rearrange the furniture. Moving a chair here, shifting a sofa there—these simple changes offer a new traffic pattern and a renewed sense of energy. It’s amazing how seeing your space from a new angle can make it feel like an entirely different room.

But as with the classic children’s book, If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, one change often leads to another, and before you know it, you’re inclined to do more than rearrange the furniture – at least I am.

Our homes are sanctuaries where we gather, learn, grow, and find comfort and joy. As our lives change over time, so too should our spaces, evolving to meet our current needs and aspirations. A simple rearrangement can often be enough, but sometimes, like the mouse who circles back to the cookie, we want more—maybe new throw pillows, a fresh coat of paint, or even a complete overhaul.

Take my experience after attending the Artisan Home Tour. I came home inspired by the designs and decided to move my desk in front of the windows. This small change brought a new view of my yard and flooded my mornings with sunshine, energizing my workday. It’s a reminder that sometimes, a simple shift is all it takes to renew your space.

However, as I contemplate updating our home decor, I see how one change can spark a series of others. A new floor might call for a new wall color, which might lead to new light fixtures, and so on. It’s like the mouse who contemplates what will happen after he gets a cookie and a glass of milk … and that eventually leads him back to where he started but with new experiences and a fresh perspective.

Whether considering a minor tweak or a major renovation, create a space that reflects who you are and nurtures who you’re becoming. Like you, your home is a living entity that should evolve alongside you. Rearranging the furniture or embarking on a larger project is an opportunity to create a home that continues to bring comfort and joy to you and yours.
