Meeting for breakfast. Grabbing a cup of coffee. Going for a walk. Having a patio lunch. Enjoying a matinee. Eating an early dinner. Sipping a glass of wine. Hanging out together on the deck.

There are so many ways to get together with friends in town, and even if it takes some effort to find mutual time on the calendar, it’s always worth it – the hugs, laughter, conversations and the warm heart feeling of simply picking up where you left off.

But not all our friends are in close proximity. Two Minute Du Jour readers share that they’ve moved to new neighborhoods, cities, states and even countries (and time zones).

Long-distance friendships take some nurturing, but are often the most enriching because we get to vicariously experience new things while also maintaining a connection to our earlier chapters.

While technology makes it possible to keep in touch more easily, it’s still a matter of making the effort. For my husband, he often has more contact with his out-of-town friendships than his in-town ones. They text each other on everything from sports, podcasts, TV series, politics, family, DIY projects, you name it. And phone calls while running errands often wrapping up with, “I just pulled into Home Depot … talk to you later.” I admire how they find a way to keep up while going about their days despite their distance.

Near or far, friendships are the nutrients that enrich our lives.
