No matter the season, no matter the weather, chances are I’ll take a daily walk. It might be a walk around the block to clear my head between work meetings. It might be a long walk along the Mississippi River with my husband when we have an hour or more or a short Poop Loop with Duke when there’s less time.

On vacation, there is quite a bit more walking – miles and miles of exploration along the beach, hiking in the mountains, or discovering the town we’re visiting.

The Joy of Walking

Most of the time, walking feels good. Really good. It’s as good for the body as it is for the mind. Walking provides a unique combination of physical exercise and mental relaxation, making it an essential part of my daily routine.

When Pain Strikes, Listen to Your Body

But every once in a while, an ache or pain starts. My husband has had an occasional bout of plantar fasciitis. A few years ago, my hip started hurting. Of course, we walked on.

Even when you’re accustomed to doing something regularly, it can lead to overuse. Listen to your body, take some time off, and change your routine. It’s easy to want to self-diagnose, but don’t hesitate to make a medical appointment to ensure it’s nothing more serious or that the measures you’re taking aren’t making it worse.

Hip, Hip … Finally Hooray

After walking on a sore hip for longer than I’d like to admit, I finally went to see an orthopedist, somewhat convinced I might need hip replacement. Fortunately, it was nothing more than tendonitis, and within a few weeks of physical therapy, I was back walking pain-free.

Now, instead of jumping to conclusions when there’s a tinge of discomfort, I pay attention to what I’m feeling, do my prescribed strength-building exercises, and change my routine.

Good stuff, Rose. Another tip is utilizing pilates. My wife was having terrible back, joint, etc difficulties when about a year ago she came across this site: https://lindywell.com/ It’s not free, but her body delightfully responded and the transformation has been quite amazing. I occasionally join her workouts, which typically take 10-15 minutes daily. When I do join her I feel noticeably good…sometimes I feel like Gumby (I know, I’m dating myself). I’d highly recommend it.

    Best,
