One evening, around the family dinner table, my four-year-old daughter suggested that we hold hands and “pass the energy.” Each of us would squeeze the hand of the person next to us until the squeeze came full circle. It was something her Montessori class did before snack.

This simple practice, later named McKinnergy by my children, has endured through the years. Even as teenagers, they still participated – even if they rolled their eyes or laughed about it. Now, as adults, they still cherish this tradition, passing it along to our grandson. It’s a small act that fosters connection and reminds us of our shared energy.

Understanding Your Energy

This tradition made me think deeply about energy—how we generate it, share it, and its impact on our lives. I call my approach to energy “Zenergy,” a blend of Zen and action. It’s about finding harmony between calm and vibrancy, between intentional actions and organic moments.

There are many perspectives on energy. Quantum physics suggests that everything is energy, vibrating at different frequencies. Ancient traditions speak of chakras, energy centers in our bodies that influence our well-being. These perspectives demonstrate the interconnectedness of all things and how our energy affects and is affected by the world around us.

Defining Your Energy:

What practices help you balance calm and activity in your life? Think about activities that help you feel both grounded and energized.

Sources of Energy:

Reflect on what recharges you. Is it physical activity, quiet reflection, or a mix? Identifying these sources can help you manage your energy levels effectively.

Energy and Personality:

Consider whether you identify more as an introvert, extrovert, or ambivert. This isn’t just about being quiet or outgoing but about what energizes you. Introverts may find energy in solitude, while extroverts recharge around people. Ambiverts draw power from both.

The Energy You Share:

How does your energy affect the energy of those around you? Seek feedback from others about the energy they receive from you.

Reflect and Act

Reflect on your energy. What gives you energy, and what drains it? How can you create a positive energy flow in your life and share it with those around you? By understanding and embracing your energy, you can enhance your well-being and the well-being of those you interact with.

Whether through your own small traditions like McKinnergy or Zenergy, share it with the world! And, just for fun if YOUR energy had a name, what would you call it? Please share.
