June evokes a sense of warmth, vibrancy, and endless possibilities. Canadian author L.M. Montgomery, known for Anne of Green Gables and a multitude of novels, short stories, essays and poems, once expressed the sentiment, “I wonder what it would be like to live in a world where it was always June.”
Doesn’t that capture the enchanting appeal of early summer? While most of us cannot experience June year-round, we can embrace its spirit and infuse our lives with its joys.
Years ago, my mother-in-law gave me Sarah Ban Breathnach’s book Simple Abundance. It offers a treasure trove of ideas for making the most of every day throughout the year.
For June, Simple Abundance recommends picnics in the park and stargazing on warm evenings to celebrating the Summer Solstice on June 21 and attending strawberry festivals. The book encourages us to savor the simple pleasures that this month has to offer.
What does June look like for you? Perhaps it’s the sweet scent of blooming flowers, children’s laughter echoing through the neighborhood, or the taste of freshly picked strawberries.
Last year, my husband and I embraced the spirit of June by embarking on an impromptu staycation in the Twin Cities. We explored new restaurants, revisited old favorites, and relished each other’s company. It was a perfectly glorious reminder to slow down and savor the moment.
Whatever it may be, take a moment to identify the activities and experiences that bring you comfort and joy. Invite your friends and family to join in celebrating June. Take a spontaneous road trip, host a backyard barbecue, or spend an afternoon lounging in the sun or under the shade of a lush tree.
The possibilities are endless, and the memories you create will be cherished for years.
June is a time for embracing the present, living in the moment, and creating lasting memories. So, let’s make a pact to fill the next 30 days with the quintessential joys of June, whether through spontaneity, intentionality, or simply doing nothing at all.
Remember, June is fleeting. Don’t let this month pass by without reverence for its joy.
