As the warm months roll in, I eagerly anticipate the start of porch season. The allure of porches has deep roots in history. Andrew Jackson Downing, a pioneer in American landscape architecture, emphasized the importance of front porches as extensions of our living spaces, encouraging social interaction and community.

Modern studies echo this sentiment, highlighting the numerous benefits of spending time on the porch. It can reduce stress, improve mood, and even enhance creativity.

Creating an outdoor space, no matter how small, can offer a refuge from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Whether it’s a front porch, a balcony, or a small garden corner, these spaces provide a perfect setting for both solo reflection and social connection. The simple act of watching the neighborhood go by brings a sense of peace and renewed energy.

My small but comfy front porch becomes my sanctuary from May through September. This tranquil retreat space is where I often find solace and inspiration. Inspired by a Florida vacation, my husband crafted two homemade Adirondack chairs and painted them a vibrant Capri blue. He even sourced cypress wood for the project, adding a personal touch to our outdoor haven.

My Summer Morning Routine

After a short indoor yoga practice, an ideal morning on the porch involves a beverage – lemon and mint-infused water or an iced tea, catching up on news, reading emails, checking social media, and preparing for the day ahead. However, the moments of pure bliss come when I sit in silence to meditate or immerse myself in a good book. There’s something magical about being outside, even during a gentle rain, covered and cozy.

I settle into one of the Adirondack chairs, accompanied by my dog Duke. Our porch is partially hidden from view, offering a sense of privacy while allowing for friendly waves to those passing by. Duke barks at passing neighbors, greeting and protecting our space. I cherish this time to listen to the birds, smell the blooming flowers, feel the sun on my face, and watch the bees flit from plant to plant.

Why not find your own outdoor haven? Let it be a place where you can recharge, reflect, and reconnect with yourself and the world around you. Start your porch season today!
