Metrics like 150 minutes of moderate cardio a week or 10,000 steps a day are easy-to-remember guidelines that encourage healthy behaviors. Many different trackers are available, from built-in smartphone freebies to premium Apple Watch packages.
Most days, I come close on the steps, and when I’m traveling, I often get double the number … so I justify that my step count averages out for the year. No matter the number, moving throughout the day is healthier than being sedentary.
In this week’s BBC Essential List, a free weekly email with a variety of lifestyle features, I was drawn to this Harvard doctor discussing whether 10,000 steps is the right amount. It turns out the number isn’t absolute—but it does support being active.
However you choose to move today, embrace your inner Nike and “just do it.”
