Later today, my work colleagues and I will attend a celebration of life for a colleague’s husband who passed away unexpectedly. This upcoming gathering, though borne from loss, promises a moment of unity and reflection for us all. We’ll contemplate the delicate threads of life, our connections with each other, and the legacies we hope to build. The themes of impermanence and the enduring impact of our actions are at the forefront of my mind.

In light of this reflective period, two books on my reading list seem particularly resonant. The first, Breadcrumb Legacy, carries with it a personal journey across continents—from one sister in Iowa to another in France for her birthday celebration. I had the privilege of being the courier for this meaningful gift, a role that highlights the book’s core message: our legacy is crafted from the myriad of small, daily actions, much like the support and unity we anticipate sharing in today’s celebration.

“The most important person to lead is yourself.”

The second book, Facing Death by Brad Stuart, MD, offers an introspective look at the essence of our being and the legacy we leave behind. With the poignant reminder that “You bring one thing into this life when you’re born, and you only take one thing with you when you leave – who you truly are,” Stuart’s words offer comfort and perspective as we face the themes of life and death head-on.

These books are reminders of the power of our daily actions and the lasting imprints they leave behind.

As we look forward to coming together in memory of a life lost too soon, these reflections and readings underscore the significance of kindness, resilience, and love in creating a lasting legacy. They remind us of the beauty and impact of our everyday actions and the connections we forge.

Consider the legacy we each aim to create. What stands out? Instead of grand gestures, I hope it’s the quiet moments of connection and support that truly define our impact.

As we head into the weekend, let’s open up this conversation, exploring how we can embrace life’s impermanence with grace, live deeply, and leave a meaningful mark on the world.
